A small group of pilots formed the Southern Districts Flying Club in 1974 operating from a field near Strathalbyn township and then later moving to the Milang Airfield and establishing a clubroom there as a base for operations. The Milang Airfield was subject to occasional flooding and when the present Strathalbyn Airfield was established in 1975, the club moved it’s entire operation, including clubrooms, there and has continued to operate successfully from this location ever since. Throughout the year, the club undertakes a range of aviation related activities from flyaway visits, aviation seminars and social interaction with other clubs. The club produces a newsletter containing news of club activities and feature articles on wide ranging subjects connected with aviation. The calendar of events includes dates of all club meetings, social events and flyaway visits. Members have free use of the clubrooms, which include TV, video and DVD player, toilet and shower facilities, kitchen, BBQ and open social/meeting area. Members are drawn from all sections of General and Sport Aviation. In recent years the strongest growth has come from the sport aviation sector and in particular, microlight aircraft. Strathalbyn and the SDFC now house the largest group of microlight pilots anywhere in Australia. As such most of our group flights are designed around the flying speeds and endurance of these unique aircraft.
